Tooth Extractions
What Are Tooth Extraction Procedures (TPEs)
A tooth extraction (TPE) is the practice of extracting one or more teeth from the socket in the jawbone. An oral surgeon typically performs this process; however, general dentists and periodontists also have this capability as part of their core dental abilities.
At Horizon Family Dentistry, we want to keep your natural teeth, as they provide the best dental solution. Our Lindsay dentists check your teeth, gums, and mouth before considering taking out a tooth. If we can’t avoid pulling a tooth, we make sure the process is as easy as possible for you. We focus on keeping your smile healthy and whole.
When Is A Tooth Extraction Recommended?
1. Severe Tooth Decay Beyond Repair
Tooth decay can reach the inner pulp of a tooth. Bacteria from the decay may infect the pulp and nearby nerves, causing an infection that can spread. The tooth may need to be pulled out immediately to stop this spread. While a root canal might sometimes fix the problem, more severe cases may require removal to control the infection and prevent it from spreading further.
2. Gum Disease
Gum disease is an infection in the gums, bones, and tissues around teeth. In its worst form, it harms the structures that hold teeth in place. In severe cases, teeth may become very loose due to gum disease, making removal necessary.
3. Removal Can Help Impacted Teeth
A tooth becomes impacted when something blocks it, or the gums don’t open enough for it to come out – often wisdom teeth. Your dentist may suggest removing this stuck tooth to reduce risks like infection or overcrowding. This can help patients with crowded back teeth and dental arches.
4. Dentists Know Best About Tooth Health
Dentists may advise removal after an injury, like a car crash. When one or more teeth are damaged beyond repair, removal might be needed to protect other parts of your mouth and body from further harm.
5. Necessary after an accident
When an accident, like a car collision, happens and a tooth suffers severe dental damage and cannot be saved, a tooth extraction may be required.

Why extract wisdom teeth?
Most people lack adequate mouth space for wisdom teeth, often leading to their removal. The space shortage can cause pain, infection, and impaction. Dental x-rays help Dr. Grover at Horizon Family Dentistry assess current or potential harm to nearby teeth and oral structures, clarifying your risk level.
Following your check-up, Dr. Grover will discuss if and when to remove your wisdom teeth. Many patients are advised to extract them before issues occur.
Wisdom Teeth Complications
Is your tooth discomfort linked to wisdom teeth? Improperly erupting wisdom teeth or lack of space can lead to various problems:
Impaction
Infection
Sinus discomfort
Decay
Harm to adjacent teeth
Overcrowding
Cysts
Discomfort/Pain
If you’re experiencing pain or need tooth extractions, contact Horizon Family Dentistry in Lindsay, Ontario, to arrange an oral exam.
